Layer, do not bulk. A down jacket, two merino bases, one insulating mid-layer, waterproof shell, broken-in boots, and a sleeping bag rated to about −10 °C cover most teahouse treks. Porters carry 15 kg; keep your daypack to water, snacks, camera and a warm layer.
